A D.I.M is a compact electronic device capable of storing physical objects within an internal anomalous space. Units are typically worn on the wrist, clipped to a belt, or carried on the person, though larger stationary variants exist.
Items stored within a D.I.M are undetectable by conventional means and are preserved in the exact condition they were stored in. No passage of time affects stored items.
The core anomaly has been successfully reverse-engineered and is currently reproducible under controlled manufacturing conditions. Currently Only Higher Facility members are allowed to use personal D.I.M's, Some guards are also allowed.
Usage#
Storage: The user brings an item into proximity of the device with the intent to store it. The device consumes the object whole, dismantling it at a molecular level before reconstituting it perfectly within its anomalous space. The item ceases to exist in observable reality. The only indication of its continued existence is the unit's integrated display, which logs all stored items.
Retrieval: The user reaches toward the device with the intent to retrieve a specific item and does so directly. The item materializes in hand.
Retrieval and storage methods vary by form factor and manufacturer. Some units require physical input via buttons or touchscreens. Larger stationary units, such as storage lockers, require the user to physically place items inside before closing the door to store them, and to select an item and open the door to retrieve it.
Origins#
The anomaly at the core of all D.I.M's occurs naturally under conditions that are not yet fully understood. Naturally forming D.I.M's have been and continue to be discovered in the field.
Natural D.I.M's are to be treated as hazardous. Unauthorized personnel should not approach, handle, or attempt to move a natural unit under any circumstances. Treat discovery as you would any unshielded hazardous material. Upon discovery, mark the location, secure the perimeter to the best of your ability, and report immediately to your superiors. Retrieval is to be handled exclusively by trained teams with the appropriate equipment and clearance.
The core anomaly has since been isolated and reproduced successfully under controlled laboratory conditions, forming the basis of all commercially manufactured units. Multiple manufacturers currently produce D.I.M's, each with their own designs, form factors, and supplementary features built around the anomalous core.
Damage & Destruction#
A damaged D.I.M should be considered a serious hazard.
A partially damaged unit may become unreliable as stored items may be inaccessible for the duration of the damage, and in cases of severe damage, items may be lost entirely. Lost items are not retrieved and not released. They are simply gone. No method of recovering items lost this way is currently known.
A destroyed D.I.M fails violently. The anomalous space collapses and all stored items are expelled outward from the point of destruction at significant velocity. The severity of the event scales directly with the quantity and mass of items stored at the time of destruction. A fully loaded unit of any tier should be treated as an explosive hazard. Personnel are advised to treat any critically damaged D.I.M accordingly and to evacuate the immediate area.
